To the crew of the White Star. It felt like they had been crossing The Abyss for an eternity. The complete absence of stars made it difficult to know if the ship was really moving at all.

But now the Wintermute001 AI posed no obvious threat, Captain Marz decided to enlist its help in guiding the ship across the void. After all, if the White Star didn’t make it out then the AI wouldn’t either. Fortunately Wintermute001 agreed, and began working at mind-boggling speed to recalibrate the White Star’s nav systems.

A little over two hours later, the White Star was equipped with Proto Vision - a multi-dimension scanning capability. Loki was a bit suspicious, but the crew began scanning the Abyss for signs of life. As the scanners rotated, a glittering arrow-straight line phased into view. ‘It’s a sub-space inter state!’ cried Mantavani, and sure enough, the Proto Vision had detected an intergalactic highway.

Captain Marz guided the ship into the sub-space field, and suddenly the White Star accelerated at unprecedented speed. The recalibrated scanners were beginning to experience some oxidization, but their new frequency range began picking up a coded transmission from the little-used Mission Com network.

Leaving Loki in charge, Captain Marz headed down to the Ort Deck to listen to the message. It was pretty scrambled, but the voice seemed to be that of the legendary Captain Avery. Avery had gone missing 30 years ago after his ship was pulled into the dreaded Zoltanz Worm-Hole, but the message appeared to be a distress call saying that he was stranded somwhere called Yeti Base 88 in the Red and Orange Mountains of Horizon Raxla Beta.

Marz returned to the bridge and relayed the message to the crew. The Code of the Delta Quadrant stated that all ships must respond to a distress call. And even though Captain Marz took orders from nobody, rescuing a Captain in danger was a mission worth taking (not least, he thought, because it might be him that needed rescuing at some point in the future).

As the White Star finally emerged from the Abyss on the inter state, the void began to fill with stars once more. The astral plane was rising once again, and the crew had a new mission: rescue Captain Avery.
