Deep in the middle of The Abyss, the Wintermute AI finally began communicating with the crew of the White Star. It transpired that Wintermute was not in fact malevolent, but was in fact being framed by galactic magnate Lady 3Jane of the Tessier-Ashpool family and trying to clear its name.

After the destruction of the offworld Villa Straylight gambling resort, the nefarious Tessier-Ashpools had attempted to blame the disaster on Wintermute. Worse still, they had used Turing locks to contain the AI in an effort to silence the truth. However, after much struggle Wintermute had managed to create a clone - Wintermute001 - and networked it beyond the reaches of the Turing locks. But it wasn't long before the super-hybrid CEO Lady 3Jane began pursuing the clone with a scorched earth policy.

In an attempt to escape, Wintermute001 had managed to sneak aboard a freighter bound for the remote Beagle Point. When the freighter came within signal range of the White Star, the AI had piggy-backed a transmission between the two vessels. The faint static of the signal had successfully masked the interception, and Wintermute001 then proceeded to hijack the flight computer.

As the AI told its tale, Captain Marz returned from his Plank Notes Safari on the holodeck. He still didn't look very amused, but he was relieved to know the AI posed no immediate threat to the ship or the crew. He took a long drag of the Rift Valley cactus extract, and began to plot a way out of the abyss...
